<description>A qualitative study on instructors' attitudes, readiness, and challenges toward flipped teaching in preparatory schools
Yılmaz, Tuğçe
The main purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the attitudes of instructors in terms of the flipped teaching model. Another purpose in this respect was to understand preparatory school instructors' perceptions related to their readiness for the flipped teaching model. Finally, a third purpose involved examining instructors' attitudes toward possible challenges while applying the flipped teaching model from their point of view. To be able to acquire this data the researcher implemented an interview with the preparatory school instructors. The participants of this study were 20 preparatory school teachers, who were working in state and foundation universities in Ankara, Turkey. A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted and the data was gathered through semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study indicated an overall positive attitude towards the flipped teaching model. The results for the readiness level reveal that even if the instructors' have positive attitudes; most of them do not feel ready for using this model because of the lack of training they received on the implementation of this model. In this regard, universities need to invest in training to raise instructors' awareness and readiness in this respect. Possible challenges were also expressed by instructors and grouped according to their source. Findings suggest that Flipped Teaching Model would be preferable for preparatory schools on condition that the substructure is prepared and the necessary training is provided by the universities.; Bu nitel çalışmanın ana amacı, hazırlık okulunda görev yapan öğretim görevlilerinin ters-yüz eğitim yöntemi hakkındaki görüşlerini incelemektir.

<title>Rewriting as a way of subverting mythologies in Angela Carter's the Passion of New Eve</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12416/6429</link>
<description>Rewriting as a way of subverting mythologies in Angela Carter's the Passion of New Eve
Mühürcüoğlu, Sıla
Angela Carter's The Passion of New Eve, first published in 1977, is a thought–provoking text in which all conceptions regarding conventional myths, stereo–typed gender identities and traditional utopian/dystopian notions are dealt with and questioned at the same time. Carter mainly attempts to shatter deeply rooted assumptions with a wide range of perspectives, ranging from religious matters to the psychological implications of a social life, rewriting not only the well–known mythologies but also conventional gender roles and traditional understanding of utopia/dystopia. Carter indicates in The Passion of New Eve that the binary division of man and woman is mostly reflected in daily life as mythologies, in gender roles and even in utopias in which one of the pair is always privileged, since utopias are places that could easily be turned into dystopias when the viewpoint is changed. However, if we are to define the whole text with only one keyword, it would definitely be "rewriting." Rewriting is reflected on the every tract of the text from psychological myths to heteronormative expectations of gender roles. In this regard, rewriting includes subversion of the dynamics of the society, which are based on patriarchy. In other words, Carter provides the reader with a new way of seeing that leads to the exploration of new territories by the perspective she gives without having to go far away by the tool of rewriting. Despite the fact that the main conflict of the text seems to arise from the contradiction between the mind and the body of the narrator after a forced sex-change operation, the main issue is how life could become disturbing, when one part is always privileged, for the unprivileged who suffers the former's oppression. The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to study Angela Carter's The Passion of New Eve in terms of poststructuralist feminist theory, mainly by the help of Butler's notion of "performativity" throughout the plot line to understand Eve/lyn's adventurous attempts at adapting to ever–changing norms wherever s/he finds herself/himself.; Angela Carter'ın 1977 yılında yayınlanan The Passion of New Eve adlı eseri geleneksel mitlerin, kökleşmiş toplumsal cinsiyet kalıplarının ve kalıplaşmış ütopya/distopya kavramlarının aynı anda incelendiği ve sorgulandığı, okuyucuyu bu konularda düşünmeye sevk eden bir romandır. Bu nedenle bu tezin amacı, Carter'ın The Passion of New Eve romanını post-yapısalcı feminizm çerçevesinde, özellikle Judith Butler'ın toplumsal cinsiyet rollerini açıklamada geliştirdiği "edimsellik" kavramı ışığında ana karakter Eve/lyn'in sürekli değişen normlar karşısında yaşadığı deneyimleri incelemek ve bu rollerin kurmaca olduğunu göstermektir.

<title>Etched on the body: Fear of the female in Ainsworth's The Lancashire Witches</title>

<description>Etched on the body: Fear of the female in Ainsworth's The Lancashire Witches
The Wonderful Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster (1613) eserinden alarak kurgulaştırır. Özellikle Mother Demdike ve Alice Nutter karakterleri ataerkil düzeni ve erkek egemenliğini kadın cinsiyet kimliğine uygunsuz davranışlarıyla tehdit ederek, bu iğdiş edilme kaygısının vücut bulmuş hali olarak cadı ismi altında canavarlaştırılmıştır.; This thesis explores the textual and discursive construction of the witch figure in 16th and 17th century Europe through William Harrison Ainsworth's The Lancashire Witches (1848). As a Victorian representative of English literature, the novel accounts a fictionalized version of the Pendle witchcraft trials that were held in 1612 while taking its characters from the only 'historical' recount of the trials, Thomas Potts' The Wonderful Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster (1613). Using Michel Foucault's theory of "power-knowledge interrelationship", this study argues how the concept of witch hunt had become synonymous with women hunting, made possible by, what Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak calls, the "epistemic violence" that was exercised by patriarchy over the female body. This defilement of the constituted knowledge of women is explained with the depictions within the novel that shows how the female sex was branded essentially evil and sinful by their nature, through discursive and textual means that Christian theology, demonology, and the inquisition had manufactured. The character Thomas Potts highlights how the agents of patriarchy hinged their arguments on the discourse that is created by the dominant power during the trials, especially for their own political benefit. The main aim is to show how the female sex was epistemically violated by the produced knowledge of these institutions because of the castration anxiety that the "abject" female body emanates for the male dominance, which is underlined by the visually 'unnatural' descriptions of certain witches. The torture scenes featuring the witch Nan Redferne reveals how patriarchy applies coercion and fetishizes the "abject" body of the witch to overcome this castration anxiety. The characters Mother Demdike and Alice Nutter reveal the figure of the witch to be another "monstrous-feminine" that threatens the patriarchal order and male dominance through their gender transgressive behaviour as prime examples of the "castrator woman".

<description>A comparative study on the theme of woman's initiation in Kate Chopin's the awakening and Doris Lessing's the summer before the dark
Kümbül, Tuba
This study offers some insight into the rise and development of feminist movement, with special focus on a comparative analysis of two novels, Kate Chopin's The Awakening and Doris Lessing's The Summer Before the Dark – products of the late nineteenth-century American Literature and the late twentieth-century English Literature, respectively. Although these two authors lived in different ages and societies, the female protagonists they portrayed in these two novels have some common features and live through similar problems and follow similar paths to cope with these problems. Undoubtedly, women in the late twentieth century enjoyed greater freedom and better opportunities than those who lived in the previous century. However, it is clear that not much has changed in terms of women's emotional response to their position in society and the kind of problems they were confronted with. For all their differences, what remains the same is women's sense of dissatisfaction with their own lives and their determination to break out of the chains in family and society. Women's familial and social responsibilities prevent them from becoming aware of their own capabilities, realizing their potential, and accomplishing their ideals. In the novels under discussion, two female protagonists -Kate and Edna- go through a process of awakening and self-discovery after a long period of suffering as wives and mothers. Unwilling to follow the established norms of society, the female protagonists, refuse to fulfill the traditional roles of wifehood and motherhood assigned to them by the patriarchal society. They set out on a journey (both physical and spiritual) in their attempt to achieve autonomy and identity. In the end, Kate (in The Summer Before the Dark) decides to return to her family with a heightened sense of confidence and greater feeling of fulfillment, while Edna (in The Awakening), who has lost all her hopes for a better life, ends up committing suicide.; This study offers some insight into the rise and development of feminist movement, with special focus on a comparative analysis of two novels, Kate Chopin's The Awakening and Doris Lessing's The Summer Before the Dark – products of the late nineteenth-century American Literature and the late twentieth-century English Literature, respectively.
