<description>Exploring an optimal selection method of photovoltaic systems for university campuses
Birim enerji maliyeti Kwh başına 8,47 Euro idi.; The ever-increasing environmental problems associated with the burning of fossil fuels for electrical power generation, together with their availability at acceptable costs difficulties, have led to more and more search for non-polluting, renewable primary sources of such energy, where solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass, ocean energies and others have been considered and studied as alternative sources. The electrical power needs at university campuses and educational institutions have been increasing by the increasing number of such institutions and their need for electrical power. The nature of their electrical loads consisting mainly of space and water heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and some other small facilities loads, is almost the same with its heaviest during the day hours and lowest at night, following the site activities. Among the various renewable energy sources, photo-voltaic direct solar radiation conversion to electrical energy has proved to be the most viable in various situations. The PV systems have been developed through the last years, increasing their efficiencies and lowering their costs, hence increasing their feasibility. Several campuses worldwide have introduced these technologies to generate all or at least part of their electrical energy loads, in what is known as sustainable energy supply, zero energy application, or green buildings. Some university competitions adopted this issue as one of these competition items. Among the different types, varieties, and manufacturers of PV systems, one may choose what fits his needs. The selection process needs to be considered carefully towards an optimum selection. In this work, the application of PV systems for university campuses is reviewed and has been found to indicate that building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is an adequate technology for building's electrical power supply, as more and more buildings are being designed and built, particularly in urban areas, realizing several advantages over buildings supplied through conventional grids. With the technical, economic, architectural, and environmental. social and legal aspects considered; a method is developed to select the optimum PV system for university campus buildings, that gives the maximum energy yield at the lowest cost among the available systems. The method is then demonstrated in a case study, at a typical university campus in Ankara, Turkey, giving reasonable results encouraging further the use of PV systems in such applications with considerable economic saving, particularly when energy conservation ways and means are applied. For the case study considered here, the annual energy yield was 22,059 MWH, of which 17,905 MWH was from the façade installed PV system, while 4,154 MWH was from on roof positioning system. The unit energy cost was 8.47 Euros per Kwh.

Deneysel çalışmalarda, ısıtılmış bloktaki sıcaklık dağılımı, gözenekli tabaka kaplanmayan ve kaplanan bloklar için farklı Reynolds sayıları (20000; In this thesis, heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics over an electronic component covered with a porous medium were investigated both experimentally and numerically. For these purposes, an experimental setup was developed and constructed, and a computer program was developed using the OpenFOAM platform. The electronic component considered was modelled by a heat dissipating block made from brass. The heat dissipating block was made in the same dimensions as a real graphic processing unit (GPU). The top surface of the block was covered by a porous layer made from aluminum. To study the heat transfer from the block under different flow conditions, it was placed in a rectangular channel. To compare the role of the porous layer on cooling of the electronic components, both experimental and numerical studies were also conducted for the block without porous layer. The problem was assumed to be three dimensional, turbulent and steady. In the experimental studies, the temperature distribution in the heat dissipating block was measured at different Reynolds numbers (20000

Ampirik çalışma toplumun dindar olmayan kesimlerinin de cami ve inanç yapıları inşa edilmesi süreçlerinde sayılıp, yer alabilecekleri ve bazı durumlarda süreçlere katılarak, katma değer sağlayabilecekleriyle ilgili ipuçları vermektedir.; This dissertation examines three "modern" mosques in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, as examples of innovative and authentic mosque architecture, which considerably varies from traditional "Ottoman-type" mosques that heavily dominate the inventory of mosques in Turkey. The Republican period after the Ottoman Empire in Turkey witnessed an ongoing debate and rivalry between "modern" and "traditional" examples of mosque architecture. Although this problem has been considered in different dimensions, it has generally been discussed by classifying the mosques as "modern" or "traditional" in the academy. It is thought that this classification should be based on the different physical characteristics of mosques, which form the repertoire of tradition in mosque architecture. In this study, the exemplar mosques selected for the inquiry were examined according to 18 different factors that were grouped under six categories considering the physical and interior features of the mosques: namely, mass and facade design, spatial organization, interior forms, architectural program, material selection, and ornament details. On the one hand, the research aims to contribute to the discussion on "modern" and "traditional" representation in mosque architecture and clarify the ambiguity in understanding and distinguishing between "tradition," "traditional," and "modern," which are essential meanings in mosque architecture On the other hand, the core of the thesis aims to find out the actors, conditions, and mechanisms that helped these "modern" mosques implemented before "Ottoman-type" mosques that dominate the inventory of mosques in Turkey in addition to recognizing "modern" mosques based on a concrete analytical framework. The thesis study reviews mosque architecture as an enduring built form that reflects patterns of social relations, networks, hierarchies, and various roles that we may categorize as social organization and societal structuring. The actors of the social organization and societal structuring, considered influential in the emergence of mosques and belief structures, are determined as congregations on the user-demand side; and as constructors, religious authorities, charity organizations, and architects-designers on the developer-supply side. In line with that, the actors taking part in decision-making, fundraising, design and planning, and constructing the selected mosques were conducted to understand the social organization and societal structuring behind the emergence of "modern" mosques and belief structures. The research results revealed that the most critical factor contributing to the emergence of mosques and belief structures with innovative forms is the architect of the building. The selected "modern" mosques and belief structures would not have been built if it were asked of the congregations and the imams who are regular users of the mosque. The results also convey that architects confident in their decision to design an innovative, unique mosque and belief structure could convince the decision-makers and the clients, well-educated people with distinguished careers and success stories in the selected mosques. Conducting empirical research has given certain clues in considering how and in which mechanisms parts of the community who hold a liberal stance and do not strictly follow the Islamic faith attend, count up, and may, in some instances, participate and add up a surplus in the construction of mosques and belief structures.

<description>Vernaküler mimarinin yer ve tektonik kavramları üzerinden okunması: Doğu Karadeniz bölgesi yapılı kırsal çevresi örneği
This thesis proposes a new "reading" attempt that examines vernacular architecture in the built rural environment through the concepts of "place" and "tectonics" together and suggests its conceptual framework. The theoretical framework consists of evaluating studies on vernacular architecture, which is the manifestation of the adaptation of the local community to the rural environment, in conjunction with the concepts of "place" and "tectonics". The concept of "place" is emphasized to highlight the interaction between vernacular architecture and humans, while the concept of "tectonics" is focused on to discuss the importance of technique and craftsmanship. Within the conceptual framework, the concept of "tectonic integrity" is proposed to question the connection between vernacular architecture and the concepts of "place" and "tectonics". In this context, the selection of the most suitable area for vernacular structures is identified as the first criterion, the manner and levels of interaction between these structures and the ground are examined as the second criterion known as "intervention to the site", and the observation of construction techniques and design principles is identified as the third criterion known as "pattern language". The Eastern Black Sea Region has been selected as the study area to test these criteria. Within the scope of the thesis, the rural built environment components were selected based on the "terrace" and "bridge" elements that make the natural environment inhabitable and accessible, as well as the "serender" structure that provides economic benefits for storing food. These components were chosen for their vernacular solutions specific to the "place" and the diversity they offer in terms of "tectonic integrity". Local craftsmen were consulted as a source of information to evaluate the connection established between "place" and tectonics based on local knowledge. In the context of vernacular architecture, where written data is limited, oral history was used as a method to access information and sources. As a result, in the thesis, emphasis is placed on the importance of preserving the endangered stock of vernacular architectural structures and the sustainability of the experience and knowledge that constitute them, especially in the Anthropocene era. It is highlighted that even today, it is possible to produce "vernacular architecture" that is in harmony with the "place" and to resist environmental issues by considering the proposed criteria of "tectonic integrity".
